Universal
Laughter Series Tour
Several of Sturges' films were a part of the Universal Laughter
Series, a film series toured the United States this summer with
exhibitions in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, and several
additional cities. From July 24-August 2, 1998, Film
Forum in New York was the venue for the six Sturges classics:
The Palm Beach Story (1942) starring Claudette Colbert and
Joel McCrea, The Great McGinty (1940 Academy Award - winner
for "Best Original Screenplay") starring Brian Donlevy
and Akim Tamiroff, The Lady Eve (1940) starring Henry Fonda
and Barbara Stanwyck, Christmas in July (1940) starring Dick
Powell and Ellen Drew, Sullivan's Travels (1941) with Joel
McCrea and Veronica Lake, and Hail the Conquering Hero (1944)
with Eddie Bracken and William Demarest. Sullivan's Travels
and Palm Beack Story was screened at the Castro Theater in
San Francisco on August 21, 1998. A special screening of The
Miracle of Morgan's Creek was recently exhibited at the Cannes
Film Festival.
