Welcome to the Official Preston
Sturges Website.
Preston Sturges was one of America's great filmmakers. He was
the first Hollywood writer to direct his own script, and thus
the credit "written and directed by" first appeared
before his name in THE GREAT MCGINTY. He won the first Academy
Award ever given for Best Original Screenplay for the script.
He went on a creative streak unparalleled in the history of film,
writing and directing six masterpieces and one that should have
been:
CHRISTMAS IN JULY, THE PALM BEACH STORY, THE LADY EVE, SULLIVAN'S
TRAVELS, HAIL THE CONQUERING HERO and THE MIRACLE OF MORGAN'S
CREEK.
His films are still very funny and very much alive. They have
been the subject of nearly 100 film festivals throughout the
world, most recently by the British Film Institute in May 2000.
The family is very supportive of festivals and make ourselves
available for press and marketing purposes.
Twelve of his scripts have been published in book form. These
are precise reproductions of the original shooting script including
the intitials of the secretary who typed the page and the date
she typed it. Readers will see that Mr. Sturges wrote his stage
directions with as much fervor and intelligence as his dialogue.
All are available through the most respected UC Press (see BIBLIOGRAPHY).
We have designed this site to be interesting to first timers
as well as the aficionados, by including photographs, posters,
a year-by-year account of his life, excerpts from several screenplays
and a brief newly-written life story. We have added a complete
filmography courtesy of Mr. Jim Curtis, a much respected author
and Preston Sturges friend and fan.
The family personally responds to every e-mail we receive, and
we are proud to report that this site has served as a reference
point and information center for over 10,000 guests since it
opened in June 1998.
